Best Summer Activities for Kids in the New York Area

There’s no doubt that summer 2020 in New York looks a little different than past summers. While the city is slowly beginning to open up after the Covid-19 shutdown, there aren’t as many activities available for kids as in normal times. However, there are still a ton of fun experiences possible while maintaining distance.

Go horseback riding

Your child can get in touch with their inner equestrian and learn (or perfect) their horseback riding technique! This hobby is surprisingly a great exercise even though it seems stationary. If your little one is an animal-lover, this summer might be the perfect time for them to get more familiar with these beautiful animals.

Go birding

This is an ideal activity for older kids who are curious about nature. You may be surprised to know that New York City is a great spot to go birding. With all the green spaces, parks, and waterfronts, there are hundreds of bird species to discover! Don’t forget your binoculars and a notebook to keep track of all your bird finds.

Helicopter flight school

If you really want to make your child’s summer unforgettable, sign them up for a youth helicopter program at a trusted New York flight school. For 3-4 weeks, your child can experience the thrill and challenge of learning to fly a Robinson R44 helicopter! With individual training sessions with experienced pilots, they might be inspired to become a professional pilot.

Bicycle ride

Riding bicycles has made a resurgence as a hobby across the country. And there’s a good reason. It’s a great way to stay active and explore while not being in close contact with others. What more could you ask for? With so many different bike paths in the city, there’s a trail for every kind of rider.

Have a picnic

Most of us haven’t been to a restaurant in months. Picnics are a great way to have a meal outside of the home while staying safe. And, you can enjoy the great outdoors of New York in summer while staying relatively cool. Grab some watermelon, a couple blankets, and find a shady spot under the trees. You’re all set for a relaxing summer afternoon.
